Eve Systems, the Munich-based provider of smart home devices (and more recently part of ABB), has announced the availability of the Matter over Thread version of its Eve Weather smart weather station. Eve Weather features a water-resistant case and a large display showing outdoor temperature, humidity, and local 12-hour weather trends. The weather data can also be checked via an app or voice assistant compatible with the Matter platform, which previously was only Apple Home, bur with Matter, expands to all other Matter compatible ecosystems, like Google, Amazon, and SmartThings. iPhone and iPad users can use the Eve app to analyse, visualise, and export all measurements. The Matter version of Eve Weather retains its US$79.95 price tag, and the good news is the original Apple Home model (with Thread) is still available if users prefer not to use Matter.

Eve Weather, with its IPX4 water resistance and aluminium housing, can be used and displayed anywhere. Its sensors measure temperature, humidity, and air pressure (not exposed to Apple Home). The weather trend for the next twelve hours is displayed by analysing local changes in air pressure. The Eve app for iPhone and iPad records and visualises weather conditions over time.

As already mentioned, Matter technology allows connection to other platforms, enabling all family members to access Eve Weather’s sensors via iPhone, Android, Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant. Eve Weather also supports smart automations with other Matter-enabled devices.

Eve Weather costs US$79.95 in the US on Amazon, and is also available from Amazon stores in the UK, Germany, Spain, and Italy, amongst others. The HomeKit model remains available, with a free Matter firmware upgrade for those existing devices.

After we were able to report on the AirPlay 2 audio adapter from Eve Systems in June, a new generation of the HomeKit secure video camera Eve Cam has now been announced. At the FCC, colleagues from Appfahren have found a new entry for the next generation of the Eve Cam. The first generation of the camera, which can only be used via Apple HomeKit, has been available since May 2020. The encrypted recordings can be stored in the iCloud via HomeKit Secure Video and do not end up on other servers.

So far, of course, very little information is known about the second generation. However, instead of a round form factor, the new model will come with a square case, where the stand can apparently be removed. There are no official pictures yet, but you can see an example of what it could look like in our cover picture.

With Matter, Eve Systems has shifted the focus from purely HomeKit devices to the new smart home standard, which also supports all other major smart home platforms. However, the current version of the standard does not yet take security cameras into account. It will therefore be interesting to see whether Eve Systems will already announce a Matter update with the new model for the future. A power connection via USB-C would be desirable.

We assume that the manufacturer will officially present the new security camera at the IFA in Berlin in early September.

Eve Systems is widely known for its smart home products and has been making waves lately with updates for Matter compatibility. This now allows the company to access platforms beyond Apple HomeKit. And now, with the acquisition of  Eve Systems by ABB, it seems like the company wants to expand its portfolio further.

A discovery on the FCC website all but confirms this; our colleagues from appgefahren.de have revealed a new product entitled Eve Play. It appears to be an audio receiver designed to provide a selection of audio devices smart, featuring a selection of inputs and outputs, including WLAN, LAN, coax, optical, and analogue. HomeKit integration also seems to be planned:

Eve Play is an easy-to-use plug-and-play interface compatible with Apple AirPlay 2. It enables almost limitless audio streaming and guarantees an extraordinary listening experience for discerning audiophiles. Connected to an amplifier, soundbar or powered speakers, Eve Play delivers impressive sound quality. With its 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi capabilities, an Ethernet port and three audio outputs, Eve Play easily integrates into various setups.

However, it remains to be seen whether the product will be launched in a timely manner, given the recent acquisition by ABB. Either way, it’s an interesting move by Eve Systems that could expand users’ smart home experience.

At CES 2023, Eve announced its retrofit solution for making existing roller blinds smart, with a motor that is designed to sit inside the tube of your own blinds, along with adaptors to fit most types and sizes. Prior to this, the company offered a ready-made solution that included both the motor and custom blinds available through a series of resellers.

Although it was well received, the cost of replacing blinds can be quite high. To address this issue, Eve is now offering the aforementioned retrofit solution that enhances existing blinds by incorporating Thread technology that works with both  Apple Home and the Eve App, with Matter integration to hopefully follow later. This is accomplished through a motor that can be inserted into the tube of the existing blinds. Despite the many different types of blind fittings available, Eve has ensured that their new kit will fit almost all types of blinds, with adaptors included for most fitting types.

The only prerequisite to using these retrofit motors is that you’ll need a Thread Border Router, which can be found in the HomePod Mini, HomePod 2nd Gen, Apple TV 2nd Gen, and Apple TV 3rd Gen with Ethernet & Wifi. However, Thread has a backup which uses Bluetooth in the absence of a Border Router, although it’s almost certainly going to be a less-than-ideal experience using this legacy smart home connectivity option.

The Eve MotionBlinds Upgrade Kit is available now on Amazon Stores in the USUK, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy.

German smart home company Eve today released their promised Thread-enabled light switch suitable for North America. The new switch doesn’t differ much from previous generations of the switch, with the same capacitive touch control surface, as opposed to a mechanical rocker or momentary button. The switch also features a small LED at the top end of the touch surface, which wasn’t present in the original model.

Of course, the big change is Thread, which equates to faster, more responsive reaction times than with Bluetooth, which the original model used. It also means that, along with all of the company’s other Thread-enabled products, this new light switch is ready for Matter. This will now ensure that once Matter begins to take hold, this and all of Eve’s other products* will be compatible with other ecosystems beyond Apple HomeKit, which includes Google, Amazon, and SmartThings.

* as long as the product category is supported

It’s important to note that the switch requires a neutral wire, so homes that don’t have neutral wires for their switch will, unfortunately, not be able to make use of this product. The upside is that this switch supports single pole 3-way setups, which is a rarity for smart switches.

Finally, like their Eve Motion Smart Blinds, you can create schedules that are stored 0n-device, so you can have the lights turn on or off at specific times, without having to worry whether your smart home automations will successfully be enacted.

The Eve Light Switch is available from Amazon for US$49.95 / CA$79.95, or directly from Eve’s own store.

More and more products are slowly being unveiled that have Thread support, with Eve considered at the forefront of this new direction. Whilst nearly all of their formerly Bluetooth-enabled products have now been updated for Thread support, one device, which previously had Thread support added via a firmware update, has now also received a ‘facelift’, namely the Eve Aqua.

the third generation of the Eve Aqua follows in the footsteps of some of its other product line, with a rounded-off square black plastic shape,  encompassed by an ‘aluminium-like’ frame, much like the Eve Room, Eve Weather, and the Eve Button, which is incidentally the last of the holdouts for a Thread update (not counting their WiFi products). The new design is supported by a new magnetic valve, that claims to be “quiet, fast and reliable”, whilst also featuring a new brass connector to replace the previous plastic ones that were reportedly quite unreliable.

The new design also has a flattened front section, as opposed to the bulbous front of the previous generations, whilst increasing the size of the power button. The new Eve Aqua still uses two AA batteries, and as such is only a Thread end device, meaning whilst it can be part of the Thread network, it is unable to help extend that network, as only powered Thread devices are capable of this function. And as it’s designed for outdoor use, it’s also both IPX4 rated, and contains UV protection for the plastic, to minimise sunlight damage.

The new Eve Aqua is available from Eve’s own website, priced at US$149.95 or €149.96 in Germany.

With the new Eve Outdoor Cam, the Munich-based company Eve Systems is offering its previously announced new outdoor camera from today, May 17th – The exclusive HomeKit Secure Video camera with integrated floodlight.

Like the Eve Cam, the new Eve Outdoor Cam works exclusively via HomeKit Secure Video. This means that the video material only ends up on Apple’s iCloud servers, and only if requested, after it has been encrypted by the Home Hub while still in your own four walls.

Floodlit HomeKit camera

The special thing about the Eve Outdoor Cam is the integrated floodlight, which can also be separately controlled as a light via HomeKit. With the integrated motion detector and the necessary 100-240V connection, the camera can easily replace an existing outdoor floodlight.

The camera delivers 1080p resolution at 24 frames per second with a field of view of 157°. The infrared motion detection, on the other hand, triggers at an angle of 100° at a distance of up to 9m at an installation height of 2.5m. Even after installation, the angle of the camera can still be adjusted via the three-axis joint.

The concept is not new

The concept of an outdoor camera with an integrated floodlight is not new. Netatmo has had a very similar HomeKit Secure Video camera in its range for several years. The recommended retail price of the new Eve Outdoor Cam is €249.99 – €50 less than the competition. However, it should be noted that the street price of Netatmo cameras is often below the recommended retail price.

The Eve Outdoor Cam can now be purchased from Amazon.de for just under €249.99 and Amazon.com for US$249.99.

Earlier this year we broke the news that Swedish roller blind company OmniaBlinds were preparing for the release of their newest products – OmniaBlinds Smart Blinds powered by EveMotion Blinds with HomeKit Technology. Despite a few delays that have set back many companies in the smart home sector and beyond, OmniaBlinds are today able to offer customers the chance to finally buy these custom blinds from their newly updated website.

OmniaBlinds says that they will be able to offer a wide choice of materials, textures and colours, with either blackout blinds or blinds that let a percentage of light through, that includes custom sizes to fit your windows to your liking, all with the Thread technology offered by Eve Motion Blinds with HomeKit technology that in turn gets your window coverings into the Home app, that of course, in turn, allows your blinds to be controlled by voice (Siri), or via automations (HomeKit).

The ‘technology’ as already mentioned, is the latest wireless protocol called Thread, which allows for very fast response times, low power consumption, and the ability to build a smart, self-healing mesh network for your home that in some ways, goes beyond the kind of mesh technology currently offered by Z-Wave or Zigbee. Currently Apple offer two products that act as what are referred to as Thread Border Routers, that allow Thread devices to both create a mesh, as well as be exposed to HomeKit in the first place. These are the HomePod Mini, and the 2021 model of the Apple TV4K.

The company have stated that the price will be dependent on the size of the window being covered, but with free worldwide shipping, the price still undercuts offerings by Lutron, for example, that usually also only ship within North America. The blinds will be offered in custom sizes ranging from a minimum width of 62cm / 24.41in, up to a maximum of 260cm / 102.36in, and a maximum drop of 285cm / 112.1in.

The blinds’ motor is battery powered is charged via a micro-USB-C port (hooray!) and cable and will take six hours for a full charge. The fully charged battery will last one year on average, with an estimated battery life of 300 charges before needing a replacement (yes, these blinds will most likely outlast us all…).

Head over to the Omniablinds website today, and you’ll be able to place an order.

After nearly two years since German smart device manufacturer Eve introduced us to their Eve Water Guard device, the company are seemingly preparing for an update to this product, that will come with Thread, with the current version using Bluetooth for connectivity. This was discovered by an FCC filing, showing Thread support for their newest iteration, with Thread being referred to in the test report created. If you’re not familiar with the Eve Water Guard, as the name implies, this is a device that detects water leaks. However, unlike the simple but effective leak sensor from Aqara, the Water guard employs a built-in siren as well as make use of a special cord that can run underneath kitchen cabinets to spread its area of detection, with the sensor detecting a leak once it hit s the surface of the cord.

Eve Water Guard (review)

You can read our in-depth review on the current model above.

Of course this update should come as zero surprise to anyone following the progress of Eve, with the company being pretty much at the forefront of presenting Thread devices, that currently includes Eve Energy Smart plugs, Eve Thermo radiator valve, their Eve door and window sensor, the Eve Aqua, and most recently their Eve Weather outdoor sensor.

With the discovery of the latest device to get the Thread upgrade, Eve is close to making all of their original Bluetooth devices Thread enabled, which is no bad thing. If you don’t know about Thread, you can read about Eve’s intentions HERE.
